Richard Donner’s 1978 epic about the Man of Steel showed how a film about a superhero could be a moving and romantic experience even for people who long ago gave up comic books. Beginning on the icy planet Krypton, the story follows the baby Kal-El, whose rocket ship lands in Smallville, Kansas. He is found there by a childless couple and raised as the shy Clark Kent (the young Kent is played by Jeff East). The film is perhaps most touching in these sequnces, with expanses of wheat fields blowing in the wind and with a young man who can’t figure out what part in destiny his great powers are meant to play. The second half, with Reeve taking over as Clark/Superman, is bustling, enchanting (the scene in which Superman flies girlfriend Lois Lane–played by Margot Kidder–through the night sky is great date material), and funny, thanks largely to Gene Hackman’s sardonic portrayal of nemesis Lex Luthor. –Tom Keogh

For his initial offering as director, Ben Affleck returns to the site of his first Oscar: South Boston. (He and Matt Damon shared the award for Good Will Hunting.) Hot on the heels of his moving turn in Hollywoodland, Affleck’s Dennis Lehane adaptation marks one of the more seamless actor-to-filmmaker transitions in recent years. Ostensibly, a procedural about the search for a missing child, class and corruption emerge as his primary concerns. First off, there’s low-rent private eye Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck, equally adept in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford). Then there’s the girl’s drug mule mother, Helene (Amy Ryan, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead). She and Patrick grew up in Dorchester, but he took a different path, setting up an agency with his girlfriend, Angie (Michelle Monaghan). Helene’s aunt, Bea (Amy Madigan), hires the duo to augment the investigation, and they team up with Captain Doyle (Morgan Freeman) and Detective Bressant (Madigan’s husband, Ed Harris). The authorities don’t appreciate the interference, but Patrick knows how to get the local populace talking, and he soon finds there’s more to the story than anyone could possibly imagine. Hard-hitting, but never soft-headed, the evocative end result proves Affleck has a flair for this directing thing and that his little brother can carry a major motion picture with aplomb. Gone Baby Gone belongs on the list of great Boston crime dramas, along with The Departed and Mystic River, Clint Eastwood’s take on Lehane. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Much of the violence has been excised: Seiya rips off an opponent’s ear in Saint, and the audience sees it pulsating on the arena floor; Knights deletes the entire sequnce. During battles, DIC colors the blood blu or purple in an unsuccessful attempt to disguise it. The actors on the Knights dub sound stiff and not very bright. The mystical underpinnings of the martial arts combat have also been simplified. In the original, Seiya’s mentor Marin explains how all matter and energy originated in the Big Bang; in Knights, she mentions, “that same power that caused the universe to begin with a bang.” Knights of the Zodiac may please Cartoon Network viewers, but it will infuriate anime purists. Like its fellow HBO series Sex and the City, this half-hour comedy broke some TV rules and went from critics’ darling to an award-winning series in three years. Curb Your Enthusiasm is the brainchild of star-creator Larry David who co-created Seinfeld and was the basis for the easily rattled George Costanza (who was played by Jason Alexander). Like George, David has a tendency to speak too much, blow things out of proportion, and, most often, fail in the end (and often liking it that way). David’s new show is also like its predecessor: it’s about “nothing” except following the day-to-day ramblings of a sometime writer and comic (this time in L.A.). Eternal qustions stemming from universal daily dilemmas are honed to perfect comedic absurdity. A notable exception is the show is only scripted by plot; much of the action is improvised. The first season starts with a one-hour mockumentary following David’s return to stand-up for the first time in years; the other 10 episodes follow a more traditional sit-com setup.

David plays “himself” (as does his friend, Richard Lewis) although his manager and wife are played by comedians Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines. Although this first season is a comedic gem, one can’t take more than an episode or two at a time–it’s acidic, biting comedy. The episodes are often built like a house of cards, which the irritable David will surely collapse by the end. Like another caustic TV character, Dabney Colman’s Buffalo Bill (1983-84), Larry David is not for everybody. –Doug Thomas
